Academics
The Bethesda Home and School for Boys is fully accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) Council on Accreditation and School Improvement. The School serves both resident and non-resident young men in grades five through twelve with a curriculum designed to prepare them for continued education at the college, university or technical college level.
Students engage in a traditional program presented in a non-traditional approach. Smaller classrooms, fewer distractions and instructional strategies intensely honed to each student's learning strengths and weaknesses contrast with an environment that is geared specifically to the unique learning styles and attributes of boys. Teachers are specialists, not only in their academic environment, but in gender specific strategies designed to bring out a young man's best efforts and best academic performance.
Students complete coursework in Language Arts, Social Studies, Mathematics, Science, History, Economics, Government, Physical Science, Chemistry, Marine Biology, Geography, Georgia History and Physics. These subjects are complemented by classes in Bible, Art, Computer Technology, Broadcasting and Physical Education.
Students embrace the Bethesda charism of a strong work ethic through their studies in EMP100 - a course developed by Savannah Technical College and taught on campus at the sophomore level. This course, together with subsequent Broadcasting courses, earn the Bethesda student high school credits as well as college credits towards certificate programs at Savannah Technical College.
Students also seek challenges through dual enrollment programs with Savannah Technical College and Armstrong State University, earning both high school and college credits simultaneously.
Bethesda students are regularly tested for academic achievement utilizing the comprehensive testing program entitled Measure of Academic Progress and Proficiency. This computerized, research based test is administered several times throughout the year, allowing faculty members to immediately assess the effectiveness of instruction, make immediate adjustments to instruction and follow up to with testing to measure for competency and comprehension. This ability to constantly measure for effectiveness insures that each child's instructional program is on target to meet the specific needs of the student. It is a highly individualized approach that yields impressive results.
